Eggs and toast after real hunger returned
For weeks, mornings were the same. I woke up with no appetite and made myself eat anyway because I knew I should. Breakfast meant deciding how much counted as enough and whether I could stop yet. I ate because the plan said to. Wanting food was not part of it. Some mornings the negotiating took longer than the eating.
Then one morning I woke up and my stomach felt empty in a hungry way. That kind of empty makes you want food instead of avoiding it. I had not felt it for so long that it took me a moment to recognize it.
I made eggs72 kcal and toast and ate the whole plate. I did not negotiate or tell myself I could stop after a certain amount. I was hungry, the food was there, and I ate it. On paper that is ordinary. At the table it was new after weeks of forcing breakfast.
Evidence that something was working
I keep thinking less about the meal than about what it suggested. For those weeks of eating without appetite, I had no way to tell whether anything was changing. Appetite does not announce progress. Waking up hungry was evidence that regular eating was having an effect and that hunger could return.
I am not treating one hungry morning as proof the problem is solved. Appetite returned once, and I expect it will come and go. For weeks I had eaten without hunger on the assumption that hunger would eventually return. That morning, over eggs and toast, it did.
