Stopping the daily morning weigh-in

Every morning, first thing, I stepped on the scale. I told myself it was just information. I stood there waiting for the number as if it would say something new.

Most days the number was about the same as the day before. I still carried it into the rest of the morning. A number I liked made the morning easier. A number I did not like made me anxious. At the time I did not notice that connection.

The anxiety I did not recognize

While I was doing it, the weigh-in felt neutral and responsible. A routine feels ordinary when you are inside it. After I stopped, I could see what had been there: a small bracing before I looked down, and a morning that arranged itself around the number. The ritual was making me anxious in a way I would have called checking in, not anxiety.

Stopping was not dramatic. I just stopped getting on the scale. After a while the mornings felt different. They were calmer because I did not have a number to react to before the day started.

I do not need a daily weight check. Whatever the scale would say today was almost always close to what it said yesterday. Checking every twenty-four hours mostly meant reacting to normal daily noise.

I am getting better at treating my weight as one piece of information among many. Some mornings I still feel the pull to step on the scale. Most mornings I just get up and start the day. That difference is why I wrote this.
